A young Marine is showing us that nice guys really do finish last.

While running in The Jeff Drench Memorial 5K in Charlevoix, Mich., Lance Cpl. Myles Kerr stopped to help out a young boy struggling to finish the race. Kerr, 19, put aside his ambition to beat his fellow Marines and instead helped motivate 9 year-old Brandon Fuchs, who lost his party during the race, to make it to the finish line.

According to the 5K results online, the Marine ended up with the slowest time in his age group.

Now, thousands of social media users are now celebrating his act of kindness after Seals Of Honor, a Facebook group commemorating the life of Navy Lt. Michael P. Murphy who died fighting in Afghanistan, posted a photo of Kerr and Fuchs running together.

(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));

Kerr was surprised that his story inspired so many people online. He responded to tweets commemorating his kindness saying, "I was just doing what any man would do, but thank you!"

According to his Twitter, he also received gifts from Fuchs' family for his help.

Scientists Closer to Cat Allergy Cure

WebMD Health News69x75_cat_1.jpg

July 26, 2013 -- Scientists say they're hopeful that a research breakthrough will lead to a cure for people who are allergic to cats.

Researchers at the University of Cambridge say they've figured out how a particular protein in cat dander triggers an allergic response in humans.

Many people are allergic to cats, dogs, and other animals. Typical symptoms include sneezing, itchiness, and a stuffed or runny nose.

Allergic reactions happen when the immune system overreacts to a perceived danger. Normally, the immune system identifies and responds to harmful viruses and bacteria. But with an allergy, the immune system wrongly identifies an allergen as dangerous, such as pet dander, and starts an immune response.

The most common cause of severe allergic reactions to cats is a protein called Fel d 1, which is found in microscopic pieces of animal skin (often accompanied by dried saliva) from grooming.

The Cambridge team discovered how this protein can trigger an inflammatory response when in the presence of a common bacterial toxin found in the environment called lipopolysaccharide, or LPS.

"How cat dander causes such a severe allergic reaction in some people has long been a mystery," said Clare Bryant, who led the research at the University of Cambridge’s Department of Veterinary Medicine. "Not only did we find out that LPS [intensifies] the immune response’s reaction to cat dander, we identified the part of immune system that recognizes it, the receptor TLR4."

The scientists then used medication that curbs the TLR4 response and found it blocks the effects of the cat dander protein on human cells, thereby preventing an inflammatory response.

Bryant says she's hopeful that the research will lead to new treatments for people with cat allergies, and possibly those with dog allergies.

The study is published in The Journal of Immunology.

Maureen Jenkins, director of clinical services at Allergy UK, describes the findings as "a big step forward in understanding how cat allergen causes such severe allergic reactions."

"Cat allergen is particularly difficult to avoid as it is a 'sticky' molecule that is carried into every building on people's shoes and clothes," she says in an e-mail. "It can also still be found in a home, on the walls and ceiling or fittings, even a few years after a cat has ceased to live there."

The new findings could "pave the way for treatments for those with persistent disease triggered by cat allergen and, in the future, potentially dog and house dust mite allergen," she says.

Camping Sets Body Clock In Tune With Nature

Study found artificial light might be disrupting circadian rhythmsStudy found artificial light might be disrupting

By Amy Norton

HealthDay Reporter

THURSDAY, Aug. 1 (HealthDay News) -- Putting down your phone and living for a week with nothing but sunlight and campfires may bring your body clock in sync with nature's rhythms, a small study suggests.

And, researchers found, even avowed night owls turn into early birds after a week of camping in the woods with no sources of artificial light -- including smartphones, computers and TVs.

"We've already known that artificial light is keeping us up at night," said lead researcher Kenneth Wright, of the University of Colorado at Boulder. But this study, he said, was an attempt to "quantify" the effect that light exposure, both artificial and natural, may be having on the human body's internal "clocks."

"What we found suggests that it's not just artificial light that's keeping us awake," Wright said. "It's also a lack of daylight."

For the study, reported in the Aug. 1 online issue of Current Biology, Wright's team recruited eight healthy adults who stuck with their normal daily routines for one week, and then spent another week camping together. During the trip, the only lights allowed were sunlight and campfire light.

At the end of each week, the researchers took saliva samples to measure study participants' melatonin -- a hormone that becomes more active in the evening, to help people fall asleep, then drops off in the early morning so they can wake up bright-eyed.

Typically, Wright's team found that when people were at home they went to bed after midnight, on average, and rose at around 8 a.m. On the camping trip, however, they turned in earlier and rose earlier.

More importantly, the campers' "biological night" kicked in about two hours earlier, Wright said. That is, their melatonin levels began to rise around sunset, and then drop off around sunrise, almost an hour before they woke up.

"So they became much more in sync with the natural world," Wright said.

And what's the big deal about that? It's not clear yet, according to Wright. "Does it make a difference in how they feel?" he said. "That's an important question."

What does seem clear, Wright added, is that "the type of light we're exposed to really does have a big impact on our biology."

And it's possible, he noted, that exposure to artificial light at night -- and a lack of sun during the day -- are contributing to some people's sleep problems and morning grogginess.

Past studies have found that in the typical artificially lit lifestyle, people's melatonin levels do not drop off until about two hours after they wake up. In essence, Wright said, their biological night is still in effect even though they are awake.

The new findings are "not surprising," said Dr. Jordan Josephson, an ear, nose and throat, and sleep specialist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. He noted that it's known, for example, that people who do shift work -- and are exposed to artificial light when the outside world is dark -- often suffer from fatigue.

Aug. 1, 2013 -- Delaware has launched a new web site that explains the options, eligibility, and coverage available in the state’s health insurance Marketplace, created under the Affordable Care Act.

“This is the first step of our process of getting our consumers educated and familiar with the” Marketplace, says James Grant, spokesman for Delaware Health and Social Services.

The site, Choose Health Delaware, offers information for individuals and business owners and is available in English and Spanish. Delaware is running its Marketplace in partnership with the federal government. All insurance purchased through the Marketplace will be bought at Healthcare.gov.

The state also has hired four community-based organizations, Brandywine Women’s Health Associates, Christiana Care, the Delmarva Foundation, and Westside Family Healthcare, whose staff will help people understand their choices, navigate through the Marketplace, and buy insurance. The guides will also be able to meet in person and help people enroll. Enrollment begins Oct. 1 for coverage starting Jan. 1, 2014.

Three insurance companies, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, Coventry Health and Life Insurance, and Coventry Health Care of Delaware, will sell major medical plans through the Marketplace. The cost of insurance is expected to be available in early September, Grant says.

'Glee': Finn Will Be 'Written Out' Of Show In Third Episode Of Season 5

"Glee" is going to write the late Cory Monteith's character Finn Hudson out of the show in the third episode of the show's upcoming Season 5, Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly announced at the Television Critics Association 2013 Summer Press Tour. Reilly also revealed that "Glee" is unlikely to continue past the show's next two seasons.

The farewell episode will deal directly with how Cory Monteith died, although Reilly didn't specifically say the character will die of an overdose.

"The third episode will deal with the Finn Hudson character being written out of the show," Reilly said. "That episode will deal directly with the incidents surrounding his death and drug addiction … Ryan Murphy is going to film PSAs with the cast, as cast members, as friends of his, they're going to speak directly to the audience [about Cory] ..."

Reilly added Lea Michele, Monteith's on and off screen girlfriend, has been "the most extraordinary human being and a pillar of strength throughout."

The episode may feature old footage of Monteith, Reilly reported. "It's a possibility because we do have some of that footage, but I can't speak to it because Ryan and the guys are working through it right now," he said.

While Reilly said "Glee" was likely to end after Season 6, he said that it could possibly last longer, but only if the show were to discover a new cast.

Fox pushed the premiere of "Glee" back a week to Thursday, Sept. 26 in the wake of Monteith's death. The first two episodes of "Glee" Season 5 will be Beatles themed and will be very "celebratory." "It's a little difficult to come out of the gate right away then have to recover. We'll have the Cory episode, then we'll go on hiatus for three weeks for the World Series, and that gives us a natural break to reset." Music sales from the episode will go into a fund in Monteith's name.

"You see some people struggling with addiction, they're very easily put into a category, 'She was always a partier,' you know. Cory was a big open wonderful life force, he was not a problem … he looked straight as an arrow, he was very open about it in his past, not so open about it in his present. Nobody was shocked, but everybody was shocked -- it was not intentional, it was an accident, it happened to somebody struggling with an addiction," Reilly said.

"Glee" Season 5 premieres Thursday, Sept. 26 at 9 p.m. ET on Fox.

PC Obsolescence In Action: Users Who Own Smartphones And Tablets Are Dropping Their PC Usage In The UK

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

As the proliferation of smartphones continues to skyrocket, device owners are more and more eschewing their PCs, opting instead to use their smartphones as their primary Internet device.

Today, UK communications regulator Ofcom published some figures in its 2013 Communications Market Report that point to how that is playing out in terms of usage. When consumers are active users of smartphones (now at 51% penetration in the UK) and tablets (now double the penetration of 2012 at 24%, 56% of which is iPad), those consumers are swaying away from using laptop and desktop PCs.

This corroborates market analysis we have seen pointing to pressure on PC sales with the rise of smaller and less expensive Internet-friendly devices like smartphones and tablets.

In fact, when consumers own and use both, Internet usage on smartphones outweighs PC usage completely. The numbers are a testament to why PC sales overall are in decline: people are finding that they are just fine without them.

ofcom internet usage by device ownership

As you can see in the table here, Ofcom found that when consumers own smartphones and tablets but don’t use the tablets much themselves, they are much more likely to use PCs to connect to the Internet: 64% of users opted for the latter, compared to 23% for their handsets and 10% for tablets. The same goes for those who may own both but don’t identify themselves as much of users of either: here, PCs account for 78% of all internet usage (61% on laptops and 17% on desktops). Overall, across all internet users in the UK, PCs are the most popular device, accounting for 74% of all internet usage.

However, it’s clear that for those who are actively using tablets, these are acting as PC replacements. Those who identify mostly with their tablet devices are nearly at parity with PCs: 48% say they use their wireless handhelds instead of PCs at 49%. But those identifying with both — “with a smartphone and who personally use a tablet” — tip the balance: 50% are using these two for their primary internet device, just edging out PCs at 49%.

It’s also telling that we are very much moving towards smaller devices overall, with laptops more popular than desktop machines every category. (It appears that Ofcom didn’t bother to canvas opinion from people who own or identify only with desktop machines.)

Overall, Ofcom’s report (a 436-page tome) makes for a compelling case for the effect that tablets, as well as smartphones, are having in general across the media landscape.

Looking at metrics like “media stacking” (conducting unrelated media tasks while watching TV) or “media meshing” (interacting or communicating about the TV content they are viewing), consumers who are tablet users are working out to be the most avid multi-taskers in almost every single category (music and social networking being the only two standouts, and in both cases by just a percentage point). The other major social phenomenon driven by digital devices is ‘media stacking’. Overall, Ofcome notes that half (49%) of people weekly use their smartphones and tablets for completely unrelated activities like internet browsing (36%), social networking (22%) and online shopping (16%).

Still, while we continue to to see rapid growth among users of more portable devices, figures also seem to speak to how we will likely be looking at a multiple-device world for some time to come.

In fact, sometimes the presence of the multiple devices is actually leading to more usage of legacy products. For example, at the same time that Ofcom notes the influence of tablets on multitasking in TV consumption, it also points out that in fact the proportion of people watching the “main” TV in the house has actually gone up, to 91% compared to 87% in 2012. Part of this has to do with advances in those legacy products, Ofcom believes.

“Our research shows that increasingly families are gathering in the living room to watch TV just as they were in the 1950s — but now delivered on bigger, wider and more sophisticated sets,” writes James Thickett, Ofcom’s director of research. “Unlike the 1950s family, however, they are also doing their own thing. They are tweeting about a TV show, surfing the net or watching different content altogether on a tablet. Just a few years ago, we would be talking about last night’s TV at work or at school. Now, we’re having those conversations live while watching TV – using social media, text and instant messaging.”

The true test of how conducive tablets are to more usage may only come at a time when these are the primary device we have for interacting, and we’re past the phase of early adopter=most enthusiastic users.

Health Costs Are Still Tame, Insurer Results ShowHealth Costs Are Still Tame, Insurer Results ShowWebMD News from Kaiser Health News

By Jay Hancock

Some give all the credit to Obamacare. Others cite the poor economy or employers forcing workers to bear more of the cost of their medical expenses. Whatever the reason, health-cost increases stayed tame through the first half of the year, insurers say. Thursday’s report from Cigna was the last dispatch on second-quarter financial results from major medical carriers. Cigna’s results were similar to those of its rivals: higher-than-expected profits thanks largely to moderate increases in medical prices and the number of medical procedures.

Insurers also shed new light on how they’re dealing (or not) with the new online health marketplaces, also called exchanges, set up by the health law; the enduring popularity of Medicare Advantage plans despite government payment pressure; and continued moves by employers to self-insure their health costs, letting them avoid some Affordable Care Act rules and taxes. Here is the earnings news that didn’t make the headlines:

– Every insurer reported moderate cost increases. Some lowered already low projections. Aetna estimated that cost increases for for its commercial insurance lines would be about 6 percent for 2013. WellPoint projected 6.5 percent for the year. Cigna projected 5 percent to 6 percent — a full percentage point lower than the previous estimate.

Before the economic slowdown, some carriers’ annual medical costs increased at close to double-digit percentages. “Medical trends continue to develop lower than our previous projections,” said Shawn Guertin, Aetna’s chief financial officer. (Thanks to Seeking Alpha for the transcripts.)

As to what’s causing it, Aetna CEO Mark Bertolini suggests that consumers delay seeking care when money is tight: “While structural changes in the health system may be playing a modest role in the low-cost trend we are experiencing, we continue to believe that this low utilization is largely driven by the weak economy,” he said.

– WellPoint projected a huge increase — 750,000 — in members whose claims will be paid directly by their employers by the end of 2014. (WellPoint makes money processing the claims.) WellPoint implied it’s taking the business from rivals. But other carriers also reported increases in self-insured employers.

Cigna sees “great progress” in processing claims for self-insured companies with from 51 to 250 employees, as well as more competition for that business. “Employers are seeing this as an attractive alternative” to conventional insurance, said Cigna CEO David Cordani. Employers who self-insure are exempt from the health law’s premium taxes, which are estimated to raise prices from 2 percent to 4 percent, as well from from some rules governing benefit levels.

– Despite a victory this year that reversed imminent government cuts, Medicare Advantage plans — managed care for Medicare members — still face funding reductions required in the Affordable Care Act. Some once speculated these would lead to Medicare Advantage’s diminishment or demise.

Health officials in Iowa, Nebraska point to salad mix as culprit, but CDC has not confirmed a sourceHealth officials in Iowa, Nebraska point to salad

By Dennis Thompson

HealthDay Reporter

FRIDAY, Aug. 2 (HealthDay News) -- The ongoing outbreak of infection with the foodborne cyclospora parasite has now reached 400 cases and spread to 16 states and New York City, according to the latest U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report issued Friday.

The source or sources of the nationwide outbreak has not yet been located, although health officials at two of the hardest-hit states, Iowa and Nebraska, say they have traced local outbreaks to an as-yet-unnamed salad mix.

In a posting on its website, the CDC said that it "will continue to work with federal, state and local partners in the investigation to determine whether this conclusion applies to the increase in cases of cyclosporiasis in other states. It is not yet clear whether the cases from all of the states are part of the same outbreak."

Prior outbreaks of cyclospora infection have typically been caused by tainted produce, the agency noted.

While no one has died from cyclosporiasis, "at least 22 persons reportedly have been hospitalized in five states," the CDC said. Most people got sick between mid-June through early July.

One expert said that while cyclospora can make people very ill, it is not usually life-threatening.

"On the infectious disease scale, this ranks well below the more notorious and dangerous ailments like E. coli and salmonella," said Dr. Lewis Marshall Jr., chairman of the outpatient services at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, New York City.

"It is unlikely to be fatal, but certainly can make one's life miserable," he said. "Symptoms include crampy abdominal pain, watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, bloating, nausea, fatigue, fever, headache and body aches."

According to the CDC, cases have now been reported from Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York City, New York State, Ohio, Texas and Wisconsin.

Cases of cyclosporiasis, which is caused by a single-celled parasite and can trigger diarrhea and stomach cramps, have been mounting through the month of July, said Dr. Monica Parise, chief of the parasitic diseases branch of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The cyclospora parasite cannot be spread from person to person; it has to be ingested via contaminated water or foods such as fruit and vegetables.

"It can be pretty miserable, because it can give diarrhea that can last for days," Parise said.

The first reported cases occurred in Iowa, which has been hardest hit with 146 people falling ill so far. The first cases came in late June, with more infections reported through July.

Other states reporting large numbers of infections are Nebraska, with 81 cases, and Texas, with 113 cases.

It takes about a week for people who are infected to become sick.

By Mary Jo DiLonardo

Reviewed By Hansa D. Bhargava, MD

Kids' moods can change in a flash -- she's happy, then bored; cranky, then sweet.

What's up with that, and how can you help her learn to manage her moods in healthy ways so she makes healthy choices?

No matter what your child is feeling, your first job is a parent is to empathize. "Let your child know that you care what they are feeling and you have a sense of what they are feeling," says Carl Pickhardt, PhD, a psychologist in Austin, Texas, and the author of Surviving Your Child's Adolescence.

When something is bothering your child, it's natural to want to fix it. Though it can be tempting to try to soothe sadness with ice cream or cookies or distract them from anger with TV or a video game, resist that urge. Junk food and screen time don’t take the edge off of feelings and can cause unhealthy weight gain.

Unless your child is experiencing a true crisis, it's usually better to let her figure out her own solution to challenges.

It's about helping your child learn a key skill:  How to bring herself back up when she's feeling down, says Pickhardt. And teaching her how to do that it in healthy ways.

Tell your child that everybody gets sad or mad or upset sometimes, but you don't have to stay that way for long or turn to unhealthy behaviors like eating junk food or vegging out on video games to feel better. Let them know this, says Pickhardt: "You have what it takes to be happy. Let's talk about some ways that can happen."

Sadness. This is a normal emotion we all feel from time to time. As the parent, it's important to acknowledge that and to find out what's making your child sad, says Los Angeles psychologist Lisa Firestone, PhD.

"We don’t have to solve the problem, whatever it is, right away or make their sadness go away," she says. "The skill we want our children to develop is to be able to identify their feelings and to be able to tolerate feeling them."

That means helping your child put names to his feelings. "When Joey wouldn't play with you at lunch, I bet you were sad," for example.

"If we can name a feeling, we can tame it," Firestone says.

Teach your child that sometimes when people feel sad it may make them want to eat unhealthy foods. Explain that when they are done identifying their feelings, they can make healthy choices to feel better. Then work together to find something that will make your child feel better.

Suggest doing something active, like taking a nature walk together or dancing to music in the living room. Explain that getting moving will help you both feel better. When you lead the way, kids are likely to follow your example.
